Press Release: Community Garden Greens Your Diet with Free and Low-Cost Summer Nutrition Classes
According to a report published by the Center for Disease Control, childhood obesity rates have stopped climbing for the first time in 20 years. Changes in school lunches or physical activity patterns were offered as possible factors. However, this is no time to let your guard down.
The Winnemucca Community Garden is offering free or low-cost family nutrition classes this summer. “Small Steps 4 Big Changes” uses a curriculum developed by nutritionist Kerry Seymour at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office. This 8 week course will be led by our very own Health and Fitness Sleuth, Patricia Setzer who will add a focus on fresh, whole foods. Eight weekly nutrition education lessons based on the USDA’s MyPyramid for Kids will be provided, along with recipe preparation, food tasting, a physical activity, raffles and games that will help keep you motivated all summer long. The classes will cover eating a balanced diet, portioning, evaluating and limiting your sugar/sweets (you’d be surprised…), fresh versus fast foods, fresh, fast and cheap, stretching your food dollar, and goal setting.
Tuesday nights from 7 to 8. June 23 – August 11. Call 623-2333 for more information or to sign up. The Winnemucca Community Garden is a United Way of the Great Basin Partner. Visit our website at winngarden.org
